The advantages of the Japanese handsaws lie in their sharpness and teeth that cut on the pull stroke.  The flexible sawblade  enables cuts to be made in places that other saws cannot reach.
The blade is toothed on both edges.  One side is for rip-sawing and the other for cross-cutting.  Should the high quality blade become blunt after a lot of use, just replace it with another one.  Because of their extreme hardness, these blades cannot be sharpened and it’s impractical to even try.
